Bringing Your Children Skiing | Kids ski lessons in Hokkaido, from age 3

Yes, and it is completely normal.

The first time in ski boots, with their feet locked in and the ground slippery underneath, every child reacts somehow.

What we do is settle them first and teach second.

Games, or whatever is around to shift their attention, until they lower their guard. Teaching movements to a child who is still tense achieves nothing — they cannot take it in, and they start associating skiing with feeling bad.

So we do not rush that first stretch. Once they relax, they learn far faster than if you push.

We would rather you did not.

The reason is straightforward: with a parent nearby, children lean on them. They fall over and look for you instead of listening to the coach explain how to get up. It slows the whole lesson down noticeably.

You will not be out of touch, though:

• Your coach stays in contact and reports how your child is doing
• You can arrange to meet for lunch at a set spot
• If anything comes up, we tell you immediately

You are also welcome to take a lesson yourself at the same time — plenty of parents do exactly that.

We work to your child's energy, not to a fixed timetable.

The first two hours are the golden window — they have the most energy and learn fastest. The main movement teaching goes there, and gets repeated until the muscle memory sets.

Then there is something that surprises a lot of parents.

In our experience, once a child can genuinely stand up and slide, they usually keep going until the afternoon session ends.

The tiring part is not the skiing, it is the stretch before it clicks. Once they are past that, they will not want to stop.

Parents rarely ask this one, so we raise it ourselves.

Protective gear: we suggest bringing children's protective gear.

Keeping snow off bare skin: from experience this matters most. In cold weather, snow against skin makes a child deeply uncomfortable, and discomfort is the number one reason they give up. We check gloves, neck warmers and the seals at cuffs and ankles before setting off.

Starting on the flat, not rushing onto a slope: practice on flat ground first, so your child moves around and decides this is something they can do. Once they feel part of it, we move to the beginner run.

Coaches assist for the whole lift ride: that is where children most often come unstuck. The lift is slow, and precisely because it is slow they lose their balance. The coach is right there holding on.

You do not need to bring your own. Jacket, trousers, skis or board, boots and helmet can all be rented here.

We do suggest bringing children's protective gear.

Watch the fit above all: if gloves, neck warmers and the cuffs at wrists and ankles are not sealed, snow gets in and a child gives up quickly.

We can arrange rental for you — just tell us your child's height and age.

If you want the gear delivered to your accommodation, tell our team and we will sort it.

Accommodation: with children, being close to the lift matters more than the place being beautiful, because you have to walk there carrying a child and the gear.

Transport: with children and a lot of luggage, a private transfer is usually far easier than the bus or the train — no connections, no hauling bags.

One-on-one under 7 is a safety decision, not an upsell.

Children this age need a coach watching them the whole time. The runs hold people of every ability, your child might be hit by someone else, and they might lose control on their own. One coach cannot watch two small children continuously.

The price is the ordinary lesson price with no surcharge. One coach with one child counts as one group.

From 7 upward they can join a regular group of up to 5 and ski with the family.

Everyone in a group should be at a similar level — if the gap is too wide the coach spends the lesson waiting, and neither side learns much.

If you have two children under 7, that is two groups. Tell us the situation first and we will advise based on what you actually need.
