Round 3Learning System

How many days do you need to ski in Hokkaido? Two full days of lessons for a first trip

For a first trip, book at least two full days of lessons (12 hours). Day one is getting used to the board, the lift and speed control; day two is where technique clicks. If you have skied before, two days or more to reshape posture, three or more to link turns.

The short answer

  • First time on snow: at least two full days, 12 hours in total.
  • A few days under your belt but still not steady: ride on your own for a while first, then book to your goal. Two days or more to reshape your posture, three days or more to link turns precisely.

Below is what our coaches actually see on the hill, day by day.

Day one: getting used to the board and riding the lift on your own

Day one is not about how much technique you pick up. It is about getting used to the board and building a sense of braking. By the end of day one most people can:

  • Work out how to get on and off the lift themselves
  • Get the knack of controlling speed and direction
  • Stop finding the whole thing unfamiliar

Your coach will set up plenty of tasks for you to complete alone, so by the end of the lesson you can already feel what riding on your own is like.

Day two and day three: from familiar to comfortable

Take snowboarding. There are two edges to learn to control: heelside and toeside. Day one is heelside, day two starts on toeside. Once both are there, you add speed, rotation and edge changes, so you can move the board around more freely.

By the end of day two most people can cruise the mountain on a heelside falling leaf without falling, and some start linking turns.

On skis, day two starts on outside-leg balance, working towards running the skis parallel. Parallel skiing lets you shape the turn and control speed more smoothly, and from there the learning shifts to how you use the skis: edges, where your weight sits, how the joints rotate.

Why two days is the floor for a first trip

In terms of mindset, day one is getting used to it and day two is getting familiar with it. In terms of technique, day one is still about getting used to the board; on day two technique starts to come naturally. One day on its own tends to stop right at used-to-it but not yet familiar.

How to lay out the whole trip: leave a rest day between lessons

For a five-day trip on the mountain, this is how we suggest laying it out:

DayPlan
Day 1Lesson
Day 2Lesson
Day 3Rest
Day 4Ride on your own
Day 5Ride on your own

The reason is simple: it rests you, and it lets the muscle memory settle. Skiing runs on understanding, and a good coach gets you there without you noticing. What you need is time to put it together. Keep stacking lessons without a break and the techniques end up blurring into each other.

If a full rest day feels like a waste, make day three a half-day lesson instead.

If you have skied a few times: ride first, then book

If you have skied a few times but are still not steady, we usually suggest riding on your own for a while first. A lot of habits only settle through your own mileage, not through one cue from a coach. Get past the mental side first and the lessons afterwards pay off faster.

Then book to your goal:

Link turns preciselyThree days or more

What happens if you book too few days

The most common outcome is wanting to learn a lot with too little time, so nothing lands solidly. New technique needs time for the body to absorb it, and aiming straight at advanced skills usually leaves both student and coach short of what they expected.

Talk through where you actually are and what you want before the lesson, so your coach is working towards the same thing you are.

Several days in a row: will it be the same coach?

The earlier you book, the more likely we can keep you with one coach. If scheduling means a change, FUYU keeps a record of every student's progress and hands it over in full to the next coach, so you do not start again.
